Doula: [doo-luh]

One who ‘mothers’ mothers

“I became a doula to support and empower women during one of the most significant times of their lives: pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. I’m driven by my commitment to make a positive difference in the lives of families living in Los Angeles by creating a calm, empowering, and personalized birth experience for every mother I support”— Jerusha Fox

  • I'm a trained and experienced labor guide, providing my pregnant clients and their partners with continuous emotional support, physical comfort, education, tools and advocacy in the prenatal phase, during birth and the postpartum period.

In the postpartum period, I provide care to families with a newborn baby.

    As a birth doula...

...I recognize birth as a key life experience that my clients will remember for the rest of their lives...

...I understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of my clients in labor...

...I assist my clients and their partners in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth...

...I stay by the side of my client throughout their entire labor...

...I provide emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint, and assistance in getting the information that my clients and their partners need to make good decisions...

...I facilitate communication between the mother, partner, their families and clinical care providers...

...I perceive my role as one who nurtures and protects my clients' memory of their birth experience...

The acceptance of doulas in perinatal care is growing rapidly with the recognition that doulas improve physical outcomes and emotional well-being of pregnant, birthing and postpartum people and infants.

  • During birth, I provide continuous physical, emotional and spiritual support to my clients, maintaining a calm and positive environment. I guide my clients through the different stage of birth, providing pain management techniques such as:

    • Breathing exercises

    • Positioning

    • Hypnosis

    • Massage

    • Music Therapy

    • Aromatherapy

I ensure my clients have access to information they need to make informed decisions, and I facilitate clear communication between them, their families, and clinical care providers to ensure their preferences are respected and met.

  • During the postpartum period, or fourth trimester, I provide essential support to my clients and their family. This includes guidance on:

    • Physical Recovery

    • Newborn care

    • Lactation

    • Sleep coaching

    • Household tasks

I also provide emotional support and connect families with resources to navigate the challenges and joys of early parenthood, ensuring that families feel confident and well cared for during this transformative time.

Additionally, we review the birth experience and create a memory that will last forever!

  • For those experiencing pregnancy loss, I offer compassionate support through a dedicated Cacao ceremony, providing a sacred space for grieving and healing. I understand how deeply the bond with a baby begins, often even before conception, and how profoundly the loss is felt, no matter the stage of pregnancy. During the ceremony, I guide families in processing their grief and offer resources and referrals for healing. This meaningful ritual honors the life that was lost, fostering peace and closure, while allowing individuals and families to grieve in their own way.

  • When selecting a doula, it's important to find someone who aligns with your personal values, communication style, and birth preferences. I recommend that individuals:

    1. Schedule consultations with potential doulas to discuss their experience, training, and approach to birth and postpartum care.

    2. Ask about their certifications, such as through DONA International, their availability around your due date, and how they handle situations when they’re unavailable.

    3. It’s also helpful to discuss their philosophy on pain management, intervention, and emotional support.

Trust your instincts when assessing whether you feel comfortable, supported, and understood by the doula, as building a strong, trusting relationship is key to a positive birth experience.

Reasons to partner with a doula:

Research shows that having a spouse or partner present at birth does NOT improve the outcome of the birthing person or baby. Research PROVES that having a doula present at birth improves the outcome of the birthing person and baby in the following ways:

Pitocin Use: There is a 31% reduction in the use of Pitocin for labor augmentation.

Cesarean Rates: Women who use doulas have a 25% lower risk of cesarean birth and an almost 60% lower risk of medical interventions.

Vaginal Birth: There is an increased likelihood of vaginal birth when a doula is involved.

Pain Medication Requests: Continuous doula support leads to a 10% reduction in requests for pain relief during labor.

Instrument Births: The use of forceps or vacuum extraction is reduced by 40%.

Length of Labor: With doula support, labor duration is typically reduced by 25%.

Adherence to Birth Plans: Women with doula support are more likely to follow their desired birth plans.

NICU Admissions: Babies born with a doula present are 14% less likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Preterm Birth: The presence of a doula reduces the risk of preterm birth by up to 22%, with a similar decrease in the likelihood of low birthweight.

APGAR Scores: There is a lower incidence of newborns with low 5-minute APGAR scores.

Postpartum Depression: Women supported by doulas are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression, with rates reduced by up to 30%.

Maternal Morbidity: Doula care has been linked to better maternal health outcomes, particularly when initiated during prenatal care, leading to reductions in maternal morbidity. A doula’s presence is especially important in the lives of women of color as there is a higher morbidity rate among women of color because of systemic racism and implicit bias in healthcare.
