Doula: [doo-luh]

One who ‘mothers’ mothers

“I became a doula to support and empower women during one of the most significant times of their lives: pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. I’m driven by my commitment to make a positive difference in the lives of families living in Los Angeles by creating a calm, empowering, and personalized birth experience for every mother I support”— Jerusha Fox

Reasons to partner with a doula:

Research shows that having a spouse or partner present at birth does NOT improve the outcome of the birthing person or baby. Research PROVES that having a doula present at birth improves the outcome of the birthing person and baby in the following ways:

Pitocin Use: There is a 31% reduction in the use of Pitocin for labor augmentation.

Cesarean Rates: Women who use doulas have a 25% lower risk of cesarean birth and an almost 60% lower risk of medical interventions.

Vaginal Birth: There is an increased likelihood of vaginal birth when a doula is involved.

Pain Medication Requests: Continuous doula support leads to a 10% reduction in requests for pain relief during labor.

Instrument Births: The use of forceps or vacuum extraction is reduced by 40%.

Length of Labor: With doula support, labor duration is typically reduced by 25%.

Adherence to Birth Plans: Women with doula support are more likely to follow their desired birth plans.

NICU Admissions: Babies born with a doula present are 14% less likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Preterm Birth: The presence of a doula reduces the risk of preterm birth by up to 22%, with a similar decrease in the likelihood of low birthweight.

APGAR Scores: There is a lower incidence of newborns with low 5-minute APGAR scores.

Postpartum Depression: Women supported by doulas are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression, with rates reduced by up to 30%.

Maternal Morbidity: Doula care has been linked to better maternal health outcomes, particularly when initiated during prenatal care, leading to reductions in maternal morbidity. A doula’s presence is especially important in the lives of women of color as there is a higher morbidity rate among women of color because of systemic racism and implicit bias in healthcare.
